One sun, many names

On 14 January the sun enters Makara. In Tamil Nadu this is Pongal, in Punjab it is Lohri, in Assam it is Magh Bihu, in Gujarat the sky fills with kites for Uttarayan. Different languages, same astronomical event, same gratitude for the winter harvest.

Tradition as technology

Before weather apps, festivals told farmers when to sow, when to rest and when to celebrate. Baisakhi marks the wheat harvest. Onam marks the end of the monsoon. Holi burns the last of winter's dead wood.

This is why India's traditions feel both ancient and practical. They were never only rituals; they were a shared operating system for an agrarian civilisation.

  • Pongal: rice, Tamil Nadu, January
  • Baisakhi: wheat, Punjab, April
  • Onam: paddy, Kerala, August-September
  • Nuakhai: new rice, Odisha, September
